 OUR STORY BEGINS...
The city of Treston, a fictional city, is placed in the scenic state of Virginia. The year is 2029, although a lot of the technology they have are quite current with what we have now.
Now of course everyone has heard stories of humans taking on the form of an animal, their form shifting with the coming and going of the full moon, and their blood lust nearly insatiable. They made them out to be monsters--deadly creatures of the night. Obviously the folklore changes with every day it seems, so who knows what people assume about shifters now. All they know is that they have seen strange occurrences recently, only furthering their resolve that these shifters do exist.
It all started about 20 years ago...
The year was 2009. Virginia had finally accepted the responsibility of licensing and regulating the use of nuclear materials within its state borders, and of course the state's population was teetering between excitement and fear. They knew what could happen if a meltdown were to occur. In time, four plants were built and ready to be used.
Time went on, and things went on as normal, aside from the white smoke that billowed into the sky a couple of miles away from the city. It was not attractive, but everyone grew accustomed to its presence. That was until the plant exploded. It was mass chaos. Flames flew into the air as smoke and debris littered the area. It was not long before the noxious gases reached Treston. Many people died, although most of the deaths were caused by the chaos of the explosion, not the gases and the explosion itself.
It took a couple of months, but clean-up was finally under way. Within the year, everything was seemingly back to normal again. The gas no longer lingered around the streets, and the residents no longer had to wear their face masks outside. It was finally safe.
Or so they thought.
Soon, some of the residents of Treston began to notice...changes. Out of fear, some of them would shift into an animal not of their choosing, and had a hard time figuring out how to turn human again. Stories began to spread around town as they gossiped about these changelings, and how some had seen these people change into animals right before their eyes. Of course the research center nosed their way in and began searching for these so-called "shifters".
They caught several and ran tests; some died in the process. The scientists realized that it was a result of the toxic waste produced well over a year ago from the incident, but telling the city residents that information would only cause wide-spread panic. They could not have that. So, instead, they claimed it was a very rare virus that decided to plague the town, and the scientists promised the city that they would try and be rid of these viruses as soon as possible.
Several of the shifters were born into their "deformity", a genetic mutation caused by the toxic waste their parents were exposed to before they gave birth. It was something they considered special, and decided it best to keep it hidden from their parents. They refused to go to the research facility. They knew what would happen.
So now it is the year 2029. Shifters are still being born, and some are just finding out their mutations as a delay from the nuclear waste. Now that the mutation exists, it is going be hell trying to exterminate them, since the only difference between their human form and that of a normal human is the faint yellow flecks in their eyes--the animal lingering somewhere inside.
